New Long-Duration Energy Storage Technologies That Help Us Get to 100% Renewable Energy on the Grid

As California and other regions across the United States aim to reach 100% decarbonization, new technologies are needed to store generated solar and wind energy as well as dispatch energy to the grid during fluctuating peak demand periods. Clean energy sources such as solar and wind power are leading the way but require multiple timescales of storage for provision of reliable and affordable energy. Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES), intraday storage that can dispatch energy on timescales of 8-16 hours, can maximize wind and solar power utilization, avoid curtailment, and support the progression towards a low-carbon electricity grid.

CESA Spotlight: DC-Coupled Solar Plus Energy Storage - Hosted by Nuvation Energy

As the pairing of solar and battery energy storage behind the meter is becoming increasingly preferred over standalone solar, DC-coupled architectures are fast becoming a preferred choice over AC-coupled systems. DC-coupled architectures provide superior round trip efficiency and reduced equipment costs by requiring fewer power conversion instances. These advantages, however can be offset by engineering design considerations that can make AC-coupling more desirable in certain situations. Join Nuvation Energy, Maximo Solar, and the California Energy Storage Alliance for a webinar exploring DC-coupled solar plus battery energy storage microgrid design. CESA will first discuss the opportunities and barriers in California for the islanding of microgrids, then Nuvation Energy and Maximo Solar will compare and contrast AC-coupled vs. DC-coupled solar and storage architectures.
